Happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July

Here’s my sister Vanessa, my mom, my dad, my son Jacob, my wife Michelle, and my daughter Jillian waiting for the fireworks to start at the Mormon Visitors Center here in Independence. I love bug spray. These bugs out here are driving me nuts. I don’t know why we choose to sit on the lawn instead of sitting in the parking lot of the Community of Christ Auditorium. (I guess churches aren’t all bad.)

Celebrity Journalism

I’m not a big fan of celebrity journalism but I’ve been thinking about Tom Cruise and his Scientology bullshit. He got into a debate with Matt Lauer on the Today show Friday about psychiatry and scientology, and Matt Lauer tried to get on him about it, but wasn’t prepared enough to be able to make Cruise look truly stupid.
Which makes me think of Judge Roy Moore. I read a biography of him that said he was a graduate of West Point and the University of Alabama School of Law and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was somehow smart enough to be able to become the Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, but he is stupid enough to think that putting a 10 Commandments monument in the rotunda of a government building is a good idea.
There are a lot of fundamentalist Christians who would seem to have all the bona fides of a smart person, but are fundy nutbags anyway. Is being a true believer really a matter of intelligence? If it were, then rational debate ought to have an effect on these people as they learn the arguments for and against their beliefs and come to the realization that their beliefs are irrational. But these otherwise smart people just don’t budge when confronted with facts and reason. Are they brainwashed? How did they get brainwashed and how do you correct that mistake? I’ve heard of de-programmers kidnapping Hare Krishnas and fixing their brainwashing, but you can’t do that to a whole churchful of Pentecostals. So what do you do?

Baseball

Baseball Game We had another good night of baseball at the fields up by Fort Osage High School where Albert Pujols played as a teenager. Jacob’s team (the Gorillas) beat the Queen City Outlaws 19-4. Their record is now 8-3.Jake is the kid standing on the bench at the far end of the dugout.

Mom’s Roses

Mom's roses
I haven’t had the gumption to post anything in a couple of months, but here’s another shot at it. This a picture of my Mom’s rosebush that I took last weekend when we were over there to celebrate my sister Vanessa’s 45th birthday. I just finished watching the DVD of “Field of Dreams” that I rented from Netflix. It put me in the mood to write. Too bad that it’s two o’clock in the morning or I would go on at length about all my favorite topics.

Zio’s

Zio's Michelle is back from her trip to New Orleans, so we spent the evening at the mall and then had a late dinner at Zio’s. I think I would have been much happier staying home and cooking dinner. All this pointless shopping just drives me up a frickin’ wall. Isn’t once or twice a week enough shopping for anybody?

Spring Has Sprung

Spring has sprungSo why does it still feel like winter? It actually snowed for a few hours today. The temperature was in the upper 30’s so it melted as soon as hit the ground.
Baseball practice started last Friday, so we had a whole three-day gap between basketball season ending and baseball starting. The Gorillas are going with red, black, and white uniforms this year. 3 of our 4 regular pitchers aren’t coming back this year, so Jake may get a chance to try this year.
They’re playing the Jamie Foxx song “Slow Jams” on Hot103 at the moment. Great song. In the unlikely event that you are a regular visitor to my site, I’ll announce that the look of the site will be evolving over the next couple of weeks. I’m learning to use CSS and XHTML and as a project, I’m changing my geocities site and this blog use strict HTML and share a single external style sheet. Please let me know if the page looks crappy in your browser.

Car-riding Cat

Car-riding cat

Jill has been forcing the cat to ride with us since he was a kitten when I take her to school. Uncharacteristically for a cat, Riley now seems to enjoy the ride. The only part he has trouble with is sliding off the dashboard when I take a turn.
