Thinking about joining a spiritual organization

I was reading this article on Slate about whether atheists or religious people are happier. It came to the conclusion that religious people are happier on the whole, but not because of their religion. They are happier because they are connected to a community. That makes sense to me.

So now I’m thinking that I should either start attending church at the All Souls Unitarian-Universalist congregation down near the Plaza, or that I should start going to meetings of one of the several local humanist or free-thought groups listed on meetup.com. I’d rather not go alone, so I guess I need to research the available options and see which ones I can get my family to attend with me. I’m betting the All Souls option is the only one that would get takers.

Day eight of fitness plan

Weight: 282 pounds

Exercise: Week 2, Day 1 of Couch-to-5K plan. Five minute warm-up walk, followed by 20 minutes of alternating 90 seconds of running with 2 minutes of walking. (Obviously, that doesn’t come out even, so the last walking section only lasts 1 minute.)

Jake and I went to the Bridger track together today. I barely made it through the last 90-second running interval. I really am horribly out of shape.

I didn’t even attempt to follow my diet yesterday. I ended up eating half of a Pizza Hut stuffed-crust supreme pizza for dinner last night. I might have better luck with the exercise half of this fitness plan if I paid more attention to the diet half.

Day seven of fitness program

Weight: 279.5 pounds

Exercise: Took Ollie for a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood. It’s my off-day from both the pushups and the running.

We’ve had our English Setter, Ollie, for 10 years this month. He was a full-grown stray when we took him in. Michelle’s sister Billie found him outside of her work near Swope Park. He is somewhere between 11 ad 13 years old now according to the veterinarian’s guess about his age when we first took him for his shots.

He seems to be aging pretty well. He was like a puppy on our walk today. He was running all over the place sniffing and peeing. But he’s kind of like me: he’s losing some hair. He had a flea problem a couple of months ago that caused him to lick and chew at his skin until he had a bald patch on his lower back. We took care of the fleas but his hair isn’t growing back very well. I wonder if they make Rogaine for dogs.

Day six of getting in shape

Fallling back to the wimp category allowed me to finish the Week 1, Day 3 workout of the hundredpushups.com plan but just barely. I did five sets of pushups (4,5,4,4,5) and I just barely managed to do the fifth pushup in the last set. Although the plan is six weeks long, I suspect that I’ll be forced to repeat some weeks because of failure to progress. I used to think I was in pretty good shape for my age, but boy was I wrong.

I weighed 280 pounds on the bathroom scale this morning. I’m starting to think I should weigh less often. The daily ups-and-downs mess with your mind. But then again, my mind is already plenty messed with.

I’m on vacation from work today. EDS has a use-it-or-lose-it policy on vacation days, so I’m taking random days off between now and the end of the year just so that my vacation days don’t go to waste as they have in years past. Next year, I’ll be up to 18 vacation days. I’ll have to try a little harder next year to spread those out. Maybe we’ll even have to go somewhere as a family next summer since we haven’t done that in a couple of years. I love going to see St. Louis so maybe we’ll do that if we only have a long weekend, otherwise, I’d like to try someplace new.

Day five of exercise program

I think my bathroom scales must be broken. I weighed 283 this morning, and two days ago I weighed 277. But I did overeat again yesterday afternoon and evening. I really have to cut that out.

Jake and I went running together this morning. I’m on Week 1, Day 3 of the Couch-to-5k running plan, so I did a five minute warm-up walk followed by 20 minutes of alternating 60 seconds of running with 90 seconds of walking. It was still dark out so I had to keep turning on the light on my watch to check the time. My hands hurt today after running too, but this time it was because they were cold. It was 40 degrees and windy, yet I still somehow managed to get sweaty.

In other news, I’ve been shopping for a Linux netbook that I’m hoping to get as a birthday present next month. So far, I’m enamored of this Asus Eee PC that I found on Amazon. For some reason, the white one is a lot cheaper than the black one. Hell, I’d take a pink one if I thought I could save money on it. I had been looking at the Asus since I saw one at the Target a few weeks ago, but Target is overpriced. They want $299 for the version with the 7″ screen and the 4 gig flash drive. The one I found on Amazon is a much better deal.

Day four of my exercise program

Apparently I tried too hard on the initial test I did on the hundred pushups program. I ended up in the second category, but I’m not able to do all the sets called for in the plan for people who are in the second category. Today, I was supposed to do five sets of 6, 8, 6, 6, and 7. I only managed to do 6, 8, 5, 2, and 1. And I was still hurting from Monday’s sets. On Friday, I think I’ll fall back to the first category to see if I can actually finish a workout.

As for my diet, I weighed 282 pounds on the scales this morning, and I ate like a pig last night. I always seem to do fine for breakfast and lunch but I fall off the wagon in the evening. Maybe I should stop eating the same evening meal that my family eats. They aren’t particularly focused on weight loss and I completely pooch the portion control. I always seem to go back for seconds, and sometimes even thirds. So, I need to plan my own meals and provide my own snacks, and I need to make sure I only prepare enough so that I can’t go back for seconds.

Day three of the exercise program

It’s cold and rainy today, but I ventured outdoors to do the workout from Week 1, Day 2 of the Couch-to-5K running program. I did a five-minute warm-up walk, followed by 20 minutes where I alternated 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking. By the end of it my fingers ached, but I otherwise felt great. I wonder why running would make my fingers hurt.

Anyway, I weighed 277 pounds on the bathroom scale this morning. I did pretty good on my diet yesterday except when I got home from work in the evening. Jill had made a baked penne pasta dish for dinner. I ate a bunch of that and then had 2 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I have no idea how many points any of that stuff was and didn’t bother to try to find out. I really need to fix my attitude in that regard. I need to find out how many points a meal represents before I start eating it. Otherwise, I’m going to gain all the weight back that I’ve lost this year.

Oh, yeah, as a follow-up to the gay marriage topic I was talking about yesterday. I was wrong in one major respect. Even if gay people live as if they were married, they still can’t adopt children or act as foster parents in some states. I thought of this as I read a post on digg that was talking crap on Arkansas for being a backward hellhole because they had voted in the election to not allow unmarried people to adopt or be foster parents. So there are some rights that you get via the state’s legal recognition of your marriage that you wouldn’t get from a separate civil contract. But still, I think gay people should go ahead and make de facto marriages even where they can’t make them de jure.

Happy Monday :(

I did Week 1, Day 1 of the hundred pushups program this morning. I didn’t do very well. I did five sets (6,6,4,4,1). The last set I was supposed to max out but do at least five. I only managed to do one. And the bathroom scales say that I weigh 280 pounds this morning. I didn’t do very well following Weight Watchers yesterday. Michelle and I went to a “celebration of life” which is sort of like a wake or a funeral, and they had a potluck buffet. I didn’t really pig out but I also didn’t try to count my points.

To make this post relevant to other people, I’ll guess I’ll make a point about the funeral. The funeral was for a gay friend of the family. His husband kept talking about the “holy union” that they had had 15 years ago in St. Louis. I kept wishing that he would just call it a wedding. For all intents and purposes, they were an old married couple. I figure that’s how to make gay marriage a legal reality. First you have to make it a reality of daily life in this country, and then it will become a legal reality. If gay people want to get married, they should go ahead and do it. A marriage in the legal sense is a contract between two people. The government has predefined the terms for straight people, but there is nothing that says gay people can’t make a contract between themselves. They can then call it a marriage even if the government won’t. Then eventually, the anti-gay-marriage laws will seem as archaic as the anti-miscegenation laws.

Getting in shape

First a brief history: I’ve had neuropathy in my feet for about five years, I was diagnosed with high cholesterol a couple of years ago, and I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes last year. In the fall of 2007, I started an exercise program but I only lasted a couple of months and I didn’t lose any weight. Michelle and I joined Weight Watchers in April 2008 and I went from 312 pounds to 272 pounds in 5 months. Our meetings were on Monday evenings, and we ended up quitting when volleyball season started because we’d rather see Jill play volleyball than go to the meetings. Unfortunately, this also meant that we haven’t exactly been following the diet. I’m back up to 278 pounds today.

I take my Zocor to keep my cholesterol under control, and I take my Metformin to keep the diabetes under control, but I just wonder what else is going to go wrong because I don’t eat right and I don’t exercise. So, I’ve decided to stop wondering and make a public commitment to get in shape. I’m going to track my progress in my blog.

I’m going to follow some ready-made programs. For strength training, I’m starting with the hundred pushups training program. For aerobic training, I’m starting with the Cool Running Couch-to-5K Running Plan. For my diet, I’m going to get back on Weight Watchers, but I’m not going to rejoin because I don’t want to spend the $39.95 a month that it costs.

For the pushups, I did the initial test today, and I was able to do 8 push-ups in a row. I’m going to start Week 1, Day 1 of the program tomorrow. It’s a three-day-a-week program, and I’m going to do it on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

For the running, I did Week 1, Day 1 of the program this morning. Jake and I went to the track at Bridger. I did a 5-minute warm-up walk, and then for 20 minutes I alternated between 60 seconds of jogging, and 90 seconds of walking. It is only 40 degrees and windy today, but I still ended up pretty sweaty. I didn’t get worn out, and I actually feel pretty good. It’s been awhile since I got my blood pumping.

As for the diet, I’ve still got my food journal built into my daily checklist, I just need to start using it again.

So, I’ll check in tomorrow with my weight, my exercise log, and my Weight Watchers point count from today.
